Hello to all friends and racing enthusiasts from abroad,

As you probably have already understood, this website is all about EGON, our first thoroughbred racehorse. He is a six-year-old chestnut gelding with four white socks and was trained by Waldemar Hickst in Cologne, Germany. EGON was bred in Ireland, but then came to Gestüt Römerhof in Erftstadt near Cologne when he was nine months old. He is out of Groom Dancer’s last crop and a close relative to multiple Group winner Egerton.

We bought EGON at the Yearling Sales in Baden-Baden in September 2007, through our agent Roger Alles from German International Bloodstock (IVA Alles). When EGON came into the auction ring, John O’Kelly, the auctioneer, expressed what we had already discovered just two days previously: “He’s a lovely horse – look at his walk!” Everyone who visited EGON in his paddock back in October, where he was relaxing for a couple of weeks between the auction and the start of training in November, soon realised: He’s got a strong character, too.

EGON made good progress, enjoyed the morning work and being pampered by his owners (an apple a day…) and simply couldn’t wait to race! Or, as one of his grooms put it, “When you look into his eyes, you know that he wants to win.” It’s as simple as that: “We love him.”

After being a close 4th in Germany’s major Derby trial, the Kölner Union Gr.2, EGON received a GAG-Rating of 93.5 kilos (~ RPR 110) and qualified for the 140th German Derby in Hamburg on 5 July 2010. There, he ran a very credible race under Richard Hughes considering that he got into a bit of trouble early, and in the end was 9th among 17. Finally, on 2 May 2010 EGON won his maiden in Mulheim and afterwards added two more wins in 2010.

During the winter, EGON regularly spent a couple of months on his “home stud”, Gestüt Römerhof, and enjoyed himself, holidays, wellness, and the good care of the stud crew. The owners called in and delivered loads of apples once a week. He returned to training in February to be ready for the new season in June and won on his first start on 2 June in Dortmund! He added another win in Krefeld in July.

In February 2012, EGON and us, we jointly decided to retire him from racing. His new job is to be his owner’s riding horse in a stable near Cologne.

We’ve also got a black-type broodmare called Ronja (GAG 91kg, TFR 105) that we bought as a yearling in Keeneland in September 2008. She’s by El-Corredor out of a Royal Academy mare, won on her first start as a 2-year-old by 9 lengths and added a fascinating win in the Listed Henkel-Stutenpreis in Dusseldorf in April 2010. Afterwards, things didn’t go that well as she was in poor health, so we decided to finish her racing career at the end of the season and to let her start a new life as a broodmare. We kept her first foal: Ross. The son of Acclamation won quite impressively on debut in Krefeld in March 2015 and had his first success at Stakes level when winning the listed Prix Luthier in Deauville in December 2015. Ross is trained by Peter Schiergen in Cologne. We Ross!

So, if you are around, just let us know. And we would be more than happy to introduce you to EGON. Just don’t forget to bring an apple. And join his fan page on Facebook and/or get in touch with us via email to egon@stall-domstadt.de.

All the best
